Art has always been a major part of my life. After two undergraduate years at UCLA in the School of Fine Arts I transferred to San Francisco State and earned a Bachelorís degree in Education. After graduation I was introduced to Chris Borggren and for three years studied oil painting with him in the style of the old masters in an atelier environment. A move back to Southern California allowed me to try teaching in the recreation department after taking classes there. Upon my return to Northern California I started classes at Foothill and de Anza Community Colleges. After life as an oil painter I turned to watercolor for the luminosity and freshness that is the characteristic of this medium. My art education continues now with workshops and seminars. I look forward to growing as an artist for the rest of my life!

My process is detailed and time consuming with a number of steps but, with each step the painting evolves. No painting ever ends up the way it was planned. Somewhere during the process the painting asserts itself and takes over and I have to be ready to take advantage of this moment and follow where the it leads. I enjoy working on a variety of surfaces: traditional watercolor paper, synthetic watercolor paper, and clayboard.

I enjoy painting bears in all their attitudes. While bears are not uncommon around the our second home on Ebbetts Pass in the Sierras most of the images in my paintings are of more confined bears. Spirit Bears appeared one day in the studio when I started out to paint some bear portraits. They are a lot of fun and the spirit quality allows them to be more than what they appear. They can be whatever the viewer wants to see.
